The grand forks city council voted to deny funding for a ted-x conference in grand forks in 2014.   after a lengthy discussion members opted not to dip into the city’s special events fund to the tune of nine-thousand-566 dollars.   Ted stands for technology…entertainment…and design and promotes itself as an exchange of ideas through national and local speakers.    Councilman dana sande questioned whether TEDx grand forks fit the criteria of promoting tourism and recreation.

The TEDx grand forks event is chaired by councilman tyronne grandstrand and his wife.  Grandstrand also chaired the committee that reviewed applications for the 119-thousand dollar event fund.    sande says that in itself raises some issues.

Grandstrand recused himself from the vote at the council and committee level.  he said he was interested in bringing an event to grand forks and not in any monetary gain.   the council did approve funding for Thirty-three other events.
