It’s not a guarantee but U-S Senator Kent Conrad says he has received assurances from top Air Force leaders over the years that the next generation of tankers will be stationed at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. The Air Force and Department of Defense are expected to release a base candidate list for the tankers by the end of the year. Conrad says even before the new refueling tankers were on the drawing board he helped negotiate a funding plan for the planes. The last of the old KC-135 tankers left the GFAFB in December 2010.
