Springfest fans can mark may 10th on their calendar. The grand forks safety-service committee reviewed a request last night for a noise variance and special alcohol license permit for the end of the year beer bash attended by u-n-d students in university park. Committee chair terry bjerke says he doesn’t like the fact the city supports an event in which leads to binge drinking by so many people. Council member ken vien says he understands the sentiment but prefers the event to be held in a controlled situation rather than an uncontrolled environment. vien also co-chairs a committee looking at high risk drinking and says the issue likely will be a topic of discussion moving forward. the committee forwarded the permit application to the city council without a recommendation.
