Grand Forks has started a discussion on whether to adopt an ordinance or policy when it comes to roadside memorials. The Safety-Service Committee has directed city staff to come up with recommendations on what type of memorials should be allowed and for how long. Committee Chair Terry Bjerke says he favors something uniform – like a sign.
Jackie Hoffarth’s sister died in a crash and supports the idea.
According to City Attorney Howard Swanson some communities have laws that place time limits on memorials…when and where they are allowed…and why – for instance a drunk driving deaths. The committee is expected to take up the issue again in the next few weeks.
