The Grand Forks Planning and Zoning Commission got its first look at a proposed south side development plan last night – called "Southern Estates." Commission member Doug Christensen says it has the potential to become the biggest development in Grand Forks since the Columbia Mall. Mayor Mike Brown added it’s about neighborhood creation and community building. The project involves building a new elementary school…space for single family and townhomes…plus commercial development. Commission member Gary Malm says construction of an interchange at I-29 and 47th Avenue South could hold the key to commercial success. Grand Forks Planner Brad Gengler says work is already undereway to secure the interchange and other road projects going into the area. Christensen says actual construction of the interchange is probably four of five years out.
