Demolition of the old Ralph engelstad arena began this morning (mon) in grand forks. Work crews starting tearing down the front of the complex. Crag Swenson of u-n-d facilities says the goal is to have the entire structure removed in about three weeks.
The cost to raze the building is some 800-thousand dollars. the scrap value of salvage materials has been pegged at 250-thousand dollars. the building opened in 1972 as the winter sports center. it was renamed after u-n-d benefactor ralph englestad in 1988. a total of 593 games were played in the building before the new “Ralph” opened in 2001. a 19-point-five million dollar indoor practice facility for u-n-d athletics will be built on the site.
