Demolition of the old Ralph engelstad arena began this morning (mon) in grand forks.   Work crews starting tearing down the front of the complex.  Crag Swenson of u-n-d facilities says the goal is to have the entire structure removed in about three weeks.

The cost to raze the building is some 800-thousand dollars.   the scrap value of salvage materials has been pegged at 250-thousand dollars.   the building opened in 1972 as the winter sports center.   it was renamed after u-n-d benefactor ralph englestad in 1988.   a total of 593 games were played in the building before the new “Ralph” opened in 2001.   a 19-point-five million dollar indoor practice facility for u-n-d athletics will be built on the site.
