When construction of the new south side elementary school in grand forks gets underway next spring it will have a red brick facing but with plenty of green options inside. The building is being designed to meet the standards for a leed “silver” certification. The certification for leadership in energy and environmental design has four levels: certified…silver…gold…and platinum. The ranking is based on the amount of energy savings…water efficiency… indoor air quality…and environmental measures built into the floor plan. Lonnie laffen of j-l-g architechts says a “silver” ranking is nothing to sneeze at. laffen says trying to earn a platinum ranking could add ten or fifteen percent to the total cost of costruction.
The u-n-d gorecki alumni center ranks in the top three percent of the most energy efficient buildings in the country. The center was completed in September 2012 to the “platinum” standards but it took a full year to certify the results. A ceremony to mark the designation was held this week.
