MPO/KLJ corridor study

Traffic fatalities are inching up across North Dakota this summer.  At last check the Highway Patrol says there have been 57 road deaths – or a dozen more than the same time a year ago.  Nearly 94% of crashes are attributable to preventable human behavior.

Earlier this month a multiple vehicle accident on Highway 2 near Airport Road left one driver dead.  The intersection over the years consistently ranks in the top ten rural crash prone locations in North Dakota.  Some officials say it might be time to dust off the U.S. 2 Corridor Study commissioned by the Grand Forks MPO.

The report focused on incorporating a Staggered T-Intersection at the site.  The configuration would create merge and acceleration lanes to east and west plus close the current existing north-south crossing linking Airport Road and County Road 5.

The MPO’s Earl Haugen says the study – although several years old – is still valid.  He says it would require a buy-in from multiple jurisdictions including:  the NDDOT…Airport Authority…City of Grand Forks….and Grand Forks County.
