The east grand forks city council has already thrown its support behind the plan and grand forks is one step closer to doing the same. At issue is an m-p-o resolution urging transportation officials to construct a separate cantilever structure for bike and pedestrian traffic on the kennedy bridge. Mndot is currently studying whether to replace or rehab the river crossing and how to incorporate foot traffic into the project. M-p-o’s earl haugen says keeping people and bikes outside the bridge truss may be more expensive but it’s the safest way to go. Haugen says it also meets the cost criteria as established by u-s law.
The city’s safety-service committee voted two-to-one to support the cantilver project. The recommendation goes to the full council Monday night. Construction is not expected until 2016.
