The greater grand forks metropolitan planning organization is asking transportation officials (nd & mn) to construct a separate cantilever structure for bike and pedestrian traffic on the highway two kennedy bridge. mndot officials are currently studying whether the 50-year old bridge should be rehabbed or replaced. Highway engineers are evaluating four other ped-bike options including adjusting / shifting lane widths and medians. m-p-o’s earl haugen says the cantilever design may be more expensive but it promotes greater safety.
Critics say the cantalever structure could disrupt the historical characteristics of the river crossing and negatively impact future inspections. construction is not expected until 2016.
