Although a final decision has not been made mndot engineers appear to be leaning towards rehabbing the kennedy bridge rather than building a new river crossing. Engineers briefed members of the grand forks council on the plan last night and will hold a public forum in east grand forks tonight. mndot says the bridge built in 1963 is in generally good condition but is showing some signs of aging including one pier on the North dakota side that is leaning and needs replacing.
The price for rehabbing the bridge is pegged at around 13 million dollars. adding an outside bike / pedestrian structure would cost another two-and-a-half million. Replacing the bridge is estimated at upwards of 33 million dollars.
