The Grand Forks Housing Authority will receive a 2012 tax abatement on approximately 80 parcels of unused land west of I-29. The Grand Forks County Commission approved the request during a special meeting. Last week the board voted to reject the abatement despite a state ruling that all housing authority property is exempt. Opponents argued that land not being used for housing should not be tax exempt. Housing officials claim they should be treated like other government entities when it comes to tax breaks. County Finance Director Deb Nelson says the amount of tax money in question is some 27-thousand-500 dollars. The exemption does not include 110-thousand in special assessments.
