A recent analysis of Federal data shows that holiday hiring nationwide in November is down and is unlikely to improve much in December. Keith reitmeier of job service in grand forks says retailers need extra help this time of the year but with north dakota’s tight labor force hiring has become a challenge twelve months out of the year.
reitmeier says with an unemployment rate under two-percent few employers can afford to start workers at minimum wage.
He adds the latest job report suggests there are over two-thousand openings in the four county region of northeast north dakota -- the majority of those are in grand forks county.
reitmeier says in may cases existing workers are being asked two take additional shifts or work extra hours during the holidays to help meet the demand.
