Bruce Furness, one of the finalists for the position of interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System, has withdrawn his name from the candidate pool. Dr. Larry C. Skogen, current acting NDUS chancellor, and Shane Goettle, J.D., are the remaining finalists.

          In an email to the State Board of Higher Education today, Furness said, “After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw as a candidate for the interim chancellor position with the North Dakota University System. While I do think I can create positive change within the system, I've decided that now is not a time when I am prepared to take on such a role.

    Furness' decision leaves Larry Skogen, the acting interim chancellor and president of Bismarck State College, and Shane Goettle, a former North Dakota commerce commissioner, as the remaining candidates.
     Board members hope to fill the position, which was vacated with the departure of the previous chancellor, Hamid Shirvani, at the Sept. 25 higher education board meeting in Bismarck. stem succeed in its endeavors.
