Both the Grand Forks National Weather Service office and the Grand Forks Airport tied record highs on Sunday. The temp climbed to 96 degrees at the NWS and 97 at the GFK. That tied the previous records going back to 1953.
Due to the high heat index forecast, Grand Forks Public Schools will dismiss school two hours early on Tuesday, August 27 and Wednesday, August 28.
Elementary schools will close at 1 p.m., middle schools at 1:30 p.m. and high schools at 12:55 p.m. Lunch will be served prior to early dismissal.
Afternoon Head Start and afternoon Early Childhood Special Education classes are canceled.
The district-wide early release of classes on August 27 and 28 was made due to the availability of air conditioning, continuity of time for families regarding child care and having a consistent transportation plan.
High school activities will continue as scheduled with extra precautions being made regarding additional rest and hydration in cooperation with athletic trainers. Middle school and elementary school athletics and intramurals are canceled August 27 and 28.
