Grand Forks voters approve school referendum

By Doug Barrett May 16, 2023 | 9:12 PM

Grand Forks voters approved a $79 million dollar school referendum issue on Tuesday.

The money will target a new Valley Middle School ($55m) …a new central kitchen ($6m) …and make security improvements throughout the district ($18).

A total of 4,481 ballots were cast in the election – with 2,898 “yes” votes and 1,580 “no” votes.

School Superintendent Terry Brenner says he’s pleased with the community support. “We’ve been anxious for some time in wanting to know what our community had to say about the the plan.  They came out and unofficial results suggest 64.78% support the plan and we are grateful for that.”

Despite the supermajority win Brenner says he’s mindful that 35% of voters did not support the plan.

School officials are hoping to have the new school ready to go by the fall of 2025.
