Grand Forks Fairgrounds closed TFN

By Doug Barrett Feb 19, 2021 | 8:54 AM

Despite falling COVID-19 numbers the Grand Forks County Commission is not quite ready to declare the Fairgrounds open for business.

The commission closed the area last spring to events without a pre-approved safety plan to deal with the virus.  County Emergency Manager Kari Goelz says various groups have inquired about using the Fairgrounds this spring and summer.  Goelz says there’s no easy answer.  “I don’t think people remember the fairgrounds are still closed.  I think they believe with COVID fatigue that everything is back to normal – our numbers are low our infection rate is bumpy but not what it was.”

Commissioner Tom Falck says with falling coronavirus case counts and the rollout of vaccine he’s optimistic – but it might be wise to wait a little longer before making that call.

The board will take another look at the request in mid to late March.  Local leaders also plan to consult with state health officials regarding guidelines for staging outdoor events.
