The grand forks sheriff’s office is warning residents about a scam making the rounds. Sheriff bob rost says an individual claiming to be a deputy from the department calls potential victims telling them there are warrants out for their arrest. The recipients are told they can remedy the situation by putting money on a gift card and calling back with the card numbers. they are given a phone number with a 7-0-1 area code. those returning the call hear a voice mail that sounds legitimate. The impersonating officer goes by the name of lt-mc coy. rost says the sheriff’s department does not operate that way and never asks anyone to put money on a gift card. authorities say at this point they are not aware of anyone being duped by the scam. if you receive such a call is contact the g-f-s-o.
