The grand forks sheriff’s office is one of only two law enforcement agencies to receive authorization to utilize drones at night. The federal aviation administration has granted the g-f-s-o permission to use the unmanned aircraft for night operations under a very limited set of circumstances. Sheriff bob rost says the department currently leases three u-a-s systems from the university of north Dakota.
Rost says the night flying unmanned aircraft have the ability to detect body heat.
The department’s unmanned systems unit has been deployed six times since may ranging from erosion control measures to searching for crime suspects. Rost says it’s important to remember that whether it’s a missing person or natural disaster they don’t always happen during daylight hours.
