Grand Forks airport leaders are still hoping to land a solution to security needs at the GFK. TSA is threatening to pull a security reimbursement grant from the airport because Grand Forks police no longer provide a constant presence at the terminal building. Private security firms have been hired but they lack arrest powers – a TSA requirement. Grand Forks police say the grant doesn’t come close to covering the overtime costs of providing the security. GFK Executive Director Patrick Dame told members of the Safety-Service Committee this week that if a solution cannot be found it puts the airport in a bind.
Dame says if the mayor appoints a “special officer” with powers falling under the airport authority it may satisfy TSA requirements. City Attorney Howard Swanson says that’s not a workable solution. The city has not ruled out requesting an attorney general’s opinion regarding the “special” appointment.
Dame says Bismarck is wrestling with a similar situation while Minot has opted to drop out of the grant reimbursement program.
