A delegation from kanuma (ka-new-ma) japan will arrive for an eight day visit to grand forks this week. The 15 middle school students will stay with host families as they learn first hand what life is like in the Red River Valley. in addition to visiting schools and itasca state park (mn) the kids will attend Friday’s Cushman classic football game -- featuring central and red river high schools. The exchange program between grand forks and kanuma has been going on since 1993 and program coordinator gene aanenson has been involved for the past 15-years. aanenson says one of the things that has surprised past student visits is north dakota's wide open spaces.
In 1998 grand forks signed off on a sister city agreement with awano (japan). Awano merged with kunama in 2005. the city is now home to over 100-thousand residents. In addition to the students the vice-mayor of kanuma will make the trip to grand forks and meet with mayor mike brown.
The students arrive Wednesday and leave October 16th.
