the grand forks air force base school board has decided to close the Eielson school on the grand forks air force base at the end of the current school year. Under the move students will merge with those at twining starting next fall. Dwindling enrollment numbers at the base school and declining federal impact aid are reasons for the move. the school consolidation will save the district around 588-thousand dollars. the latest student headcount on base is 342 students. the student numbers peaked in 1995 at one-thousand-574. even with the consolidation twining will only be at 36-point-four percent capacity. the g-f-a-f-b school board approved the merger on a four-zero vote.
The grand forks school board has approved the hiring of Edwin Gerhardt as the district’s next business manager. Gerhardt is a 23-year veteran of the Bismarck public schools. He was among eight applicants for the post vacated by Vicky Schwartz who accepted a job out of state. gerhardt will earn a salary of 135-thousand dollars – slightly less than Schwartz was scheduled to earn next year. Gerhardt holds a master’s degree from u-n-d. he will begin his new duties in grand forks on july first.
