The Grand Forks Fire Department says progress is being made in bringing apartments and condos into compliance with portions of the 2009 international fire code. Fire officials have been working with the owners of 50 apartment buildings and 13 condos to install fire notification systems in their buildings. The system supplements smoke detectors by alerting other residents of a potential fire danger. Over the past year 20 apartments have installed the warning systems and three condos are good to go. Grand Forks Fire Marshall Brandon Boespflug says there is a capital cost to the upgrade but that isn’t the only stumbling block businesses face coming into compliance. He says finding electrical contractors willing to do the work has slowed progress down. Boespflug says the goal is to see full compliance in 2013.
