The grand forks council has passed an amendment to the city code banning employment discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation. several residents attending last night’s meeting urged the council to go a step further and extend the law to cover all employees and those seeking housing in grand forks. city attorney howard Swanson says he has looked at both issues but says the council may lack the power to control what happens in the workplace.
Councilman terry bjerke says the amendment isn’t necessary.
The measure passed on a six to one vote.
