The grand forks city council will be asked to weigh in on a building code change Monday night that sparked debate at this week’s safety-service committee. At issue is a provision in the city code that requires builders to cover particle board in new construction with a material like drywall. Fire chief peter o’neill says the particle board burns quickly and removing the provision could endanger firefighters lives. Builders counter that it hasn’t been an issue in the past and the requirement adds another 15-hundred dollars to the cost of the average new home. the primary source of debate involves unfinished basements. Committee chair terry bjerke says building codes are about safety and in this case he has to side with the fire department.
