Grand forks came close but missed a chance to establish the date for the season’s first frost this morning (mon). The temperature dipped to 37 degrees just before seven a-m. According to the national weather service the average date for a first frost at the grand forks airport is September 13th…and the n-w-s office September 16th. The first frost likely occurs when air temps drop to between 36 and 33 degrees. Mark ewens of the n-w-s office says looking at the 6-10 and 8-14 day forecast it may be awhile for lows to reach that level.
ewens says we won’t be able to stave off the cold forever but the long-range weather outlook suggests above normal temps through the end of year.
The average first freeze dates for grand forks…32 to 29 degrees…arrive this weekend.
A number of reporting points in northeren Minnesota had a chilly start to the day: hibbing 30 degrees…international falls 29…ely 28….and orr and crane lake dipped to 27.
