North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple has signed legislation that would give the state some of the toughest abortion laws in the nation. The Republican governor inked into law a bill that bans abortions solely for the purpose of gender selection and genetic abnormalities. Dalrymple also said “yes” to a senate bill that requires any physician who performs abortions in North Dakota to have staff privileges at a nearby hospital -- and those priviledges include allowing abortions to take place at their facility. The governor also signed a bill that bans abortions after detection of a fetal heartbeat. Dalrymple admits the constitutionality issue of the laws may be an open question. He also urged lawmakers to appropriate money for a litigation fund before they adjourn to defend a potential legal fight.
