Burgum vetoes 80 mph & pronoun bill

By Doug Barrett Mar 30, 2023 | 1:01 PM

Governor Doug Burgum has dusted off his veto pen on a couple of high profile bills passed by the North Dakota Legislature this session.

Senate Bill 2231 would prohibit schools from referring to students by any pronouns that do not reflect the sex assigned to them at birth.

In his veto message Burgum says ambiguity throughout the bill would invite lawsuits and put teachers in the position of trying to determine how to refer to student without violating the law.

The so-called pronoun bill was approved by the House on a 60-32 vote margin…and the Senate 34-12.

The governor also rejected a bill raising the interstate speed limit to 80 mph.  Burgum says the higher limit increases the severity risk of speed-related crashes – which goes counter to the goals of the Vision Zero campaign.   The governor adds without a primary seat-belt law he is unable to support the higher limit.

The House supported the higher limits 65-29….the Senate 25-21.
