The Grand Forks Air Force Base is one of four finalists on the active duty base list to receive new KC-46A tanker mission. Joining Grand Forks on the list are Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma….McConnell in Kansas…and Fairchild in Washington state. U-S Senator John Hoeven says making the short list moves the GFAFB a step closer in the selection process. A total of 179 planned KC-46A aircraft are part of the first phase to replace more than 400 existing tanker planes – although not all of the aging aircraft will be retired. The Air Force will now conduct on site surveys of each base to evaluate each location for operational and training requirements…impacts to existing missions… housing… infrastructure…and manpower. The Air Force is expected to announce a permanent site for the tanker by May. Grand Forks has not hosted a tanker mission since 2010.
