Responding to public criticism about a 24-thousand dollar raise given to the city’s community relations officer the Grand Forks Council opted last to freeze all department head salaries until a review is completed. Mayor Mike Brown authorized the pay bump for Pete Haga earlier this year. Brown has said more than once that he stands by his decision to grant the salary hike after the position was reviewed by the Human Resource Department. Council President Hal Gershman says the size of the increase has angered a lot of people. Council member Ken Vien voted against the motion saying Haga is not a department head so why target the department heads? The review is expected to be completed by the end of the year – raises don’t kick in until 2013.
