GF Jail Record

The Grand Forks County Correctional Center was a busy place in 2012. In fact last year’s inmate population hit a new high. The Grand Forks jail held on average just over 184 prisoners per day. That compares to 160 prisoners in 2011 and the previous all-time high of 175 in 2010. Jail Administrator Bret Burkholder says as more local prisoners take up beds the ability to house federal inmates declines -- as does the revenue they generate to offset jail costs. Those federal dollars have dropped from one-point-75 million in 2010 to one-and-a-half million in 2012.
Burkholder says in future planning there is a model to expand the jail although we are not there yet.
County inmates made up just shy of 69-percent of the inmate stays while federal holds accounted for 22-percent of the total.
