As Grand Forks continues to grow the need for affordable housing will only increase according to a report presented to members of a Blue Ribbon Commission on Housing.  Consultant Mark Schill of the Praxis Strategy group says Grand Forks grew seven-percent between 2000 and 2010.   Job growth has climbed three-point-seven percent since 2009 – more than twice the national rate.  Schill says that has put more pressure on housing needs.   Schill says rent is at or above peer cities and the vacancy rate is two-point-eight percent or less.  The analysis says demand for single family homes has pushed the median home price upwards from 153-thousand in 2009 to nearly 170-thousand in 2012.  The goal of the commission is to not only analyze the existing market but develop priorities to bolster housing opportunities in Grand Forks.
